To many Libyan people, the biggest question mark about Gadhafi does not involve his repressive and dictatorial rule, delusional statements or brazen lies. Behind closed doors, for years, they've wondered if he is Jewish. Last week the issue came out in the open, asNBC's Richard Engel reported from Libya that one in five rebels was fighting Gadhafi because he believes the leader is Jewish.
Conflicting reports surrounding Gadhafi's birth have circulated since about 1970, two years after a Gadhafi-led coup made him the de facto leader of Libya.
In a handful of biographies from years ago, mostly written by Europeans, Gadhafi is almost always described as being born in a tent in Sirt, the son of a poor, illiterate Bedouin sheepherder and his wife.
But the hushed-up rumors in Libya about Gadhafi's parentage involved his mother being Jewish. The stories have conflicted over the years, and the narratives are different. One had her converting to Judaism at age 9. In another, Gadhafi's grandmother is Jewish but leaves her husband for an Arab sheik.
A more specific claim, backed up by a Libyan historian, is that Gadhafi was born out of wedlock to a Jewish woman and an Italian soldier in a village east of Tripoli. Because of the shame surrounding the birth, the baby was given to a Catholic cardinal who in turn gave the child to the sheepherder and his wife.

What we are observing in Libya is the rebirth of colonialism. Only this time it is not individual European governments competing for empires and resources. The new colonialism operates under the cover of "the world community," which means NATO and those countries that cooperate with it. NATO, the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, was once a defense alliance against a possible Soviet invasion of Western Europe. Today NATO provides European troops in behalf of American hegemony.
Washington pursues world hegemony under the guises of selective "humanitarian intervention" and "bringing freedom and democracy to oppressed peoples." On an opportunistic basis, Washington targets countries for intervention that are not its "international partners." Caught off guard, perhaps, by popular revolts in Tunisia and Egypt, there are some indications that Washington responded opportunistically and encouraged the uprising in Libya. Khalifa Hifter, a suspected Libyan CIA asset for the last 20 years, has gone back to Libya to head the rebel army.

عاطف دغلس : أكرم منصور يموت بصمت مؤبد
لم تشفع 33 عاما في سجون الاحتلال الإسرائيلي ولا خمسة أمراض يعاني منها، ولا حتى المناشدات التي أطلقتها الجهات الرسمية
الفلسطينية الرسمية أو الشعبية لإطلاق سراح الأسير الفلسطيني أكرم منصور من مدينة قلقيلية شمال الضفة الغربية.
ويعاني منصور (51 عاما) من عدة أمراض تتراوح في خطورتها بين ورم سرطاني في رأسه منذ سنتين، وضغط بالعين والتهاب بالأذن الوسطى، وغيبوبة بين الفينة والأخرى أدت قبل أسبوع فقط إلى كسرين في يده.
وقالت أمل شقيقة أكرم المعتقل في سجن عسقلان الإسرائيلي إن الاحتلال رفض ومنذ تدهور حالة شقيقها الصحية قبل أيام السماح لمحاميه بزيارته، متذرعا "بالرفض الأمني" ورفض الإفصاح عن حقيقة الأمراض التي تصيب شقيقها.
وأكدت للجزيرة نت أن سلطات الاحتلال رفضت كذلك محاولات تخفيض الحكم المؤبد والمقدر بـ35 عاما، والاكتفاء بـ 33 سنة نتيجة لوضعه الصحي وهو ما يعرف لدى الأسرى "بمحكمة شليش" كما لم تزد كل الصرخات التي أطلقتها للإفراج عنه سوى مزيد من العند الإسرائيلي.
وقالت أيضا إنه وبعد أن ألمت الأمراض بشقيقها، وجهت عائلته وكثير من المؤسسات الإنسانية والحقوقية التي تعنى بشؤون الأسرى رسائل محلية وعالمية للإفراج عنه، إلا أن كل هذه الدعوات "لم تقدم أي شيء لأكرم".
وأضافت أمل أنها ستتوجه في زيارة للرئيس الفلسطيني للتدخل شخصيا للعمل على إطلاق أخيها حتى يتسنى لهم معالجته بأسرع وقت.

عبداللطيف مهنا : خواطر يمانية من اليمن السعيد
قدر لي أن التقي يمانيين في عديد من المواقع في أرض العرب الواسعة إلا اليمن، والتي لم يقيد لي رؤيتها إلا لاحقاً في بداية العقد الأخير، أتاحه لي حضوري لمؤتمر ضد التطبيع عقد في صنعاء، المدة كانت لا تتجاوز الخمسة أيام، وكانت أول وآخر مرة أزور فيها اليمن، زيارة رأيت فيها المؤتمرين أكثر من رؤيتي لليمن... لكن ما قبل هذه الزيارة وبعدها ظل اليمن يمني أنا الذي ترعرع معي وازداد في نفسي تمكناً. وأزعم أن لدي معرفة غير قليلة باليمن تعدت الجغرافيا والتاريخ إلى تفاصيل القبائل وتفرعاتها العديدة، وحتى لهجاتها، فأفرق مثلاً بين لهجة خولان وتلك التي تسمعها في زبيد أو الحجرية أو المكلا، واحفظ أمثالاً شعبية حضرمية ونوادر تهامية وقليلاً من الشعر اليمني العامي. لدرجة أنني كنت أمازح اليمانيين الذين كان العديد منهم في السبعينات يشارك في النضال الفلسطيني سارداً عليهم نوادرهم مقلداً لهجاتهم. وفيما بعد كان صديقي القيادي الناصري اليمني عبد الملك المخلافي يناديني بأبو يمن، وكثير من اليمانيين كانت تخدعهم ملامحي الحضرمية فيظنونني حضرمياً، والبعض يشتبه بأنني من أهل البيضا... وهنا أسرد لكم حادثة:
في نهاية الستينات، كنت في عمّان، حيث دهمنا شتاؤها القارس، الأمر الذي أجبرني أنا وشقيقي، الذي استشهد فيما بعد، إلى التجوال في أسواق المدينة بحثاً عن معطفين يقيانا برودة شتاء ذلك العام، ولما كانت نقودنا شحيحة انتهينا إلى ما يعرف بسوق اليمنيين، وهم لاجئون فلسطينيون من أصل يمني، جاؤوا لفلسطين في المنتصف الأول من القرن الماضي للعمل مثل كثير من العرب في ذلك الحين، ثم بعد النكبة هاجروا مع من هاجر من أهلها إلى الأردن... في السوق كانت تباع الملابس المستعملة وكانت هذه ما تسمح لنا بشرائها نقودنا. كان صاحب المحل مشغولاً بالزبائن وكان من الصعب علي الاستفراد بانتباهه، ولما فرغ سألته عن سعر ما اخترناه ذكر لي رقماً جعلني استدير مبتعداً يائساً، وإذ لاحظت ضيقاً وإحساساً بالخيبة ألم بأخي قلت له مشجعاً، انتظر وسوف أريك، وعدت صائحاً:
هيا يا خبيري أدي لنا هذا البالطو... خبيري هذه في شمال اليمن وحول صنعاء تعني صديقي، وهي، بالمناسبة ، تستعمل في العبرية أيضاً وبنفس المعنى.
ولم يكتم أخي دهشته باسماً عندما رأى أن صاحب المحل انتفض وهو يرد على صيحتي بصيحة مثلها: أنت يمني يا أخي؟ قلت لا، فصاح مرة أخرى : سألتك بالله يا أخي أنت يمني؟ قلت مؤكداً: لا والله. قال : إذن، أوتعرف اليمن؟
عندها مازحته، قلت: وأعرف سوق الملح في صنعاء وسوق البسباس (الفلفل) في القاعدة!
وتجاذبنا الحديث بمرح، وقد نسي البائع زبائنه إلى حين، أكدت له أنني لم أرَ اليمن في حياتي، اعني حتى تلك الفترة... وغادرته حاملاً أنا وأخي ما وقانا برد شتاء ذلك العام، وكان بما لا يزيد عن ثلث الثمن الذي سمعته منه أول مرة!
هذه الأيام، وأنا اتابع ما يدور في ميدان التغيير في صنعاء وسائر مدن يمننا المنتفض، اتذكر أولئك اليمنيين، الذين استشهدوا في الجنوب اللبناني دفاعاً عن القضية العربية المركزية، وأتذكر أن هنالك منهم الأسرى في سجون أعداء العرب حتى الآن... واتذكر، فيما اتذكر، القائد الفلسطيني الراحل الذي أطلق عليه المناضلون ضمير فلسطين أبو ماهر اليماني، الذي قد تصادف في كل شارع من شوارع اليمن ما يذكرك بسحنته الطيبة الودودة... أذكر الأنفة اليمنية، واتذكر أن القبلي في الشمال عندما يستثار يقول مفاخراً، ابن الرحوب لا قلها (لو قال لها) دوري دارت، ويعني الدنيا... والرحوب هي أرحب التي تنحدر منها قبيلتا حاشد وبكيل الكبريان... واتذكر، وأنا أراقب الصراع بين ميداني التغيير والسبعين، بين اليمن المستقبل واليمن الاستبداد، ما يذكرني بما كان يحدث إبان الأيام الأولى لثورة اليمن على أسرة حميد الدين. كان قبائليو خولان الطيال قد انقسموا في العائلة الواحدة، الشباب مع الثورة والشيب مع الإمام، لأن الكهول كانوا قد عاهدوا الإمام يحيى على مبايعة ولي عهده البدر... كان الشباب الجمهوريون يتمركزون على قمة جبل يفصله وادي عميق عن قمة أخرى يرابط عليها الشيوخ الملكيون، كان الأب الغاضب المحافظ على العهد يصيح في ابنه العاق الثائر في الطرف الآخر: ميلك يا عاصي جدتك، فيرد عليه ابنه: جمهر يا شيبة إبليس، ويبدأ تبادل إطلاق النار بينهما..!
وعندما أتابع ما يجري في اليمن هذا المتحول من أقصاه إلى أقصاه إلى ميادين تغيير، اتذكر أول انطباعاتي عن اليمنيين عندما تعرفت إليهم لأول مرة. كنت احس أنه، برغم عقود الجهل والتجهيل التي فرضت عليهم طويلاً، فإن في اليمني ما يدفعك للاحساس بأثر جلي لموروث حضاري عريق كامن في الشخصية اليمنية، إنه موروث بدأ باقيال حمير وملوك سبأ، وانتهى بالبردوني... وعندما اسمع وأقرأ شعارات منتفضي اليمن السلمية، تزداد يمنيتي التي شبّت وشابت معي، وأفاخر بأنني من أمة يتمتع فيها شعب هذا الجزء من بلادها بكل هذا المستوى العالي من الوعي النضالي الرائع، هذا الذي يحرك ويوجه هذه الإرادة الشعبية التغييرية السلمية العظيمة... كلنا نعرف أننا في اليمن إزاء شعب مسلح، واليمني يستحي أن يسير دون امتشاق سلاحه، ونعلم أن في اليمن، كما يقال، ما يزيد عن الستين مليون قطعة سلاح، وأن السلاح الفردي في هذه الغابة الشعبية المسلحة هو لا يقتصر على النوع الخفيف، بل يصل إلى المتوسط، كالهاون، وقاذف RBJ، وحتى مضادات الدبابات والطائرات، ولدى القبائل ما يزيد ثقلاً... ومع هذا، فثوار ميادين التغيير اليمنية المليونية نزعوا لحكمتهم الثورية سلاحهم ليصبحوا وهم عزلاً الأقوى من تراسانات النظام وآلته العسكرية... لهذا الوعي، وهذه الإرادة المذهلة، والادراك السليم لطبيعة الصراع وسبل حسمه حضارياً، وأعترف أن فيهما، رغم معرفتي المزعومة باليمنيين، ما يمثل المفاجئة بالنسبة لي، أقول:
لكل هذا سوف ينتصر شعبنا العربي في اليمن، وسيكون له نصيبه المميز من فوز مجيد في هذه الثورة العربية الفريدة. ستكون صنعاء هي الثالثة ترتيباً بعد تونس والقاهرة... ولهذا سوف نظل كعرب نردد: اليمن يمان والحكمة (الثورية) يمانية... ونظل نقول: بأن يمننا أصلنا... في هذه المرحلة المصيرية، ليحفظ الله اليمن.

Il est en fait victime d'une réponse française aux attaques de son gouvernement contre la liberté de la presse.
Pour le site anglophone Iranian.com, sur lequel s'exprime (en persan) Kamran Najafzadeh à son arrivée à l'aéroport de Téhéran le 26 mars, le journaliste iranien « a été forcé de quitter la France en raison de restrictions que lui a imposées le gouvernement français après ses soi-disant reportages “controversés”. »
Voici notamment ce que déclarait le journaliste, qui était jusqu'ici le correspondant à Paris de la Radio-Télévision de la République islamique d'Iran (IRIB, en anglais) :
« Après 18 mois d'activité journalistique, les ministres français de l'Intérieur et des Affaires étrangères ont décidé, lors d'une rencontre, que “le reporter d'IRIBNews avait franchi la ligne jaune et a attisé la haine dans l'opinion publique française”. »
Israël demande l’annulation du rapport Goldstone sur Gaza : AL Auofok
Israël a demandé samedi aux Nations unies l’annulation du rapport rédigé par Richard Goldstone sur le comportement de Tsahal lors de l’opération "Plomb durci" dans la bande de Gaza fin 2008-début 2009.
Dans ce document remis en 2009 au Conseil des droits de l’homme des Nations unies, le magistrat sud-africain estimait qu’Israël tout comme le Hamas au pouvoir à Gaza s’étaient rendus coupables de crimes de guerre lors du conflit.
Vendredi, le juge écrivait dans une libre-opinion publiée par le Washington Post : "Si j’avais su ce que je sais maintenant, le rapport Goldstone aurait été différent".
Quelque 1.400 Palestiniens, dont plusieurs centaines de civils, et 13 Israéliens ont péri lors de l’opération lancée par Tsahal en représailles à des tirs de roquettes sur l’Etat juif.
Les Israéliens ont refusé de coopérer avec la mission d’information du juge Goldstone avant de qualifier le contenu de son rapport de "déformé et partial".
Dans un communiqué publié samedi, le Premier ministre Benjamin Netanyahu demande à l’Onu de procéder à l’annulation de ce rapport. "Tout ce que nous avons dit s’est révélé exact. Israël n’a pas nui intentionnellement aux civils. Le fait que Golstone se soit rétracté doit aboutir à classer le rapport", affirme le communiqué.
Réagissant à la mise au point du rapporteur, le ministre israélien de la Défense, Ehud Barak, a invité dans un communiqué ce dernier à "présenter ses conclusions devant les instances internationales à qui il avait soumis son rapport ’dénaturé et trompeur’".
De son côté, le chef de la diplomatie israélienne, l’ultranationaliste Avigdor Lieberman, a déclaré sur la deuxième chaîne de télévision que les civils n’avaient pas été pris pour cible. "Notre système judiciaire a enquêté sur chaque cas (de mauvaise conduite) sans préjugé (...) la vérité a fini par percer".
Dans sa tribune libre, Richard Golstone écrit que si Israël avait coopéré avec lui au moment de sa mission, il aurait pu montrer que sa politique n’avait pas consisté à cibler délibérément les civils.
Il ajoute dans les colonnes du Washington Post : "Je regrette que notre mission d’information n’ait pas eu ces éléments expliquant les circonstances dans lesquelles nous avons dit que des civils ont été pris pour cible parce que cela aurait probablement influencé nos conclusions sur le caractère intentionnel et les crimes de guerre".
Le magistrat note aussi que l’Etat juif a enquêté à des degrés divers sur les incidents mentionnés dans son rapport, contrairement au Hamas qui n’a lancé aucune investigation sur les tirs de roquettes.

La démocratie à coup de bombes. C’était donc, ça. En 2011 encore, le feu colonialiste, inchangé, c’est-à-dire criminel et désespérant. Deux ans après Plomb Durci, alors que les preuves s’accumulent et que la puissance occupante impose le blocus à la population qu’en droit elle doit protéger, le Conseil de Sécurité regarde passer les trains et le falot Obama oppose son véto à une résolution affirmant que la colonisation des terres palestiniennes est un crime.

Ensuite, ils ont pris l’OTAN comme tenue de camouflage. Tous les grands impérialistes – US, Chine, Russie – voulaient tuer dans l’œuf cette responsabilité de protéger : c’est fait. On reviendra au « droit d’ingérence » qui permet tous les coups tordus, en toute moralité.
Aujourd’hui, le projet est clair, et bien éloigné du mandat : il faut dessouder Kadhafi. La guerre pour le pétrole ? A d’autres ! Il suffit de tendre la main pour faire le plein. La Libye est une session de rattrapage, et le loufoque Kadhafi une cible idéale. Les US, la France et la Grande-Bretagne n’ont rien vu venir en Tunisie, en Egypte, et dans le monde arabe. Ils s’étaient calés sur le péril islamiste qui permettait de soutenir toutes ces dictatures serviles et de faire voter à la pelle les lois de contrôle social dans leur pays.
Aujourd’hui, ils doivent composer avec ces peuples arabes qui se lèvent, car il est hors de question de lâcher la mainmise sur la région.

Ils ont, par la force des armes, démantelé tout ce qui faisait ce grand pays, organisant la guerre entre les communautés pour justifier leur maintien. A youth center at the UNRWA's Al-Amari refugee camp near Ramallah recently dedicated a soccer tournament to Wafa Idris, the first Palestinian female suicide bomber, who killed one Israeli and injured more than 100 in 2002. Last year the Fatah Students' Youth Movement at the UNRWA's Women's Training Center and Faculty of Educational Sciences in Ramallah named its soccer tournament after the notorious terrorist Abu Jihad.
In early March, Palestinians took the streets of Lebanon to protest the tragic death of a handicapped 11-year-old boy who was denied care by a Lebanese hospital. The boy was turned away after Lebanese officials told his family that the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) had to pay for his care. The organization only covered the boy's care for 10 days, and he died at the hospital's entrance when his parents could not afford further treatment.
After his death, a grieving relative told the AhlulBayt News Agency that "We no longer want UNRWA. We want an insurance company to insure our children, families and women." In short, they want the opportunity for a normal life.
But in Lebanon, as in all Arab states except for Jordan, legal restrictions prevent Palestinians from leading such lives, forcing them instead to remain, as they have for over 60 years, dependent on the UNRWA. Lebanese rules keep Palestinians out of various professions, such as engineering and medicine; prevent them from owning property; and ban them from accessing services such as private health insurance.
This latest tragedy underscores these practical barriers against the development of Palestinian civil society. But the organization meant to help them is also a major obstacle to their well-being and peace with Israel. UNRWA facilities are hotbeds of anti-Israeli, anti-Western and anti-Semitic indoctrination, and according to the Palestinian Press Agency, Hamas has stored weapons in tunnels dug beneath UNRWA schools. The organization still refuses to screen its employees against lists of known members of Hamas, Hezbollah and other terror groups (although it does say it checks for and excludes al Qaeda and Taliban members as required by a U.N. Security Council resolution). Meanwhile, its staffers intimidate anyone from taking a stand in favor of peaceful coexistence with Israel.
All this helps explain why the Canadian government announced last year that it would defund the UNRWA and divert taxpayer monies to specific projects to help Palestinians. This decision has of course been met with howls of anger, as it challenges the sacred cow that the UNRWA has become.

The U.S. is the largest Western investor in the UNRWA, having given it almost $228 million in 2010, with another $600 million pledged to support the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and $300 million for Gaza. The U.S. provides around a third of the UNRWA's total budget. The European Union isn't far behind, having committed 66 million euros towards the UNRWA's general fund last March, and another 20 million euros in November. And in October the U.K. announced it was adding a GBP 3 million "performance bonus" to its earlier GBP 8 million pledge. Americans and Europeans alike would do well to follow Canada's example and use tax money to promote independent Palestinian organizations and private-sector growth instead.
For the moment, though, that aim seems distant. A bill in the U.S. Congress to demand transparency and accountability from the UNRWA died last year in committee. Fiorello Provero, vice-chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, has also pressed for more clarity on how European taxes are spent by the UNRWA and the Palestinian Authority, though without much success thus far.
That's a pity, because both in practice and design, the UNRWA is the exact opposite of other refugee-relief operations, which generally seek to resettle refugees, not stir grievances and perpetuate indefinite states of dependence. Despite its purported goal, it is hard to claim that the UNRWA has created any Palestinian institutions that foster a genuinely civil society.
Ideally the UNRWA would be disbanded and Palestinians given the freedom -- and the responsibility -- to build their own society. Or, should the organization be found to carry out any necessary activities that Palestinians couldn't better provide for themselves, these services could be transferred to agencies within the U.N. that actually deal successfully with refugees. The worst choice would be to pour more money into the unaccountable black hole of the Palestinian Authority. Ultimately our tax money would be better spent promoting independent civil organizations and private-sector growth. Perhaps then injustices like the death in Lebanon might be avoided.

A youth center at the UNRWA's Al-Amari refugee camp near Ramallah recently dedicated a soccer tournament to Wafa Idris, the first Palestinian female suicide bomber, who killed one Israeli and injured more than 100 in 2002. Last year the Fatah Students' Youth Movement at the UNRWA's Women's Training Center and Faculty of Educational Sciences in Ramallah named its soccer tournament after the notorious terrorist Abu Jihad.
The U.S. is the largest Western investor in the UNRWA, having given it almost $228 million in 2010, with another $600 million pledged to support the Palestinian Authority in the West Bank and $300 million for Gaza. The U.S. provides around a third of the UNRWA's total budget. The European Union isn't far behind, having committed 66 million euros towards the UNRWA's general fund last March, and another 20 million euros in November. And in October the U.K. announced it was adding a GBP 3 million "performance bonus" to its earlier GBP 8 million pledge. Americans and Europeans alike would do well to follow Canada's example and use tax money to promote independent Palestinian organizations and private-sector growth instead.
For the moment, though, that aim seems distant. A bill in the U.S. Congress to demand transparency and accountability from the UNRWA died last year in committee. Fiorello Provero, vice-chairman of the European Parliament's Committee on Foreign Affairs, has also pressed for more clarity on how European taxes are spent by the UNRWA and the Palestinian Authority, though without much success thus far.
That's a pity, because both in practice and design, the UNRWA is the exact opposite of other refugee-relief operations, which generally seek to resettle refugees, not stir grievances and perpetuate indefinite states of dependence. Despite its purported goal, it is hard to claim that the UNRWA has created any Palestinian institutions that foster a genuinely civil society.
Ideally the UNRWA would be disbanded and Palestinians given the freedom -- and the responsibility -- to build their own society. Or, should the organization be found to carry out any necessary activities that Palestinians couldn't better provide for themselves, these services could be transferred to agencies within the U.N. that actually deal successfully with refugees. The worst choice would be to pour more money into the unaccountable black hole of the Palestinian Authority. Ultimately our tax money would be better spent promoting independent civil organizations and private-sector growth. Perhaps then injustices like the death in Lebanon might be avoided.
